EXMED FOR CANCER

Exercise as Medicine for Cancer is a coordinated pathway of care among medical cancer specialists (e.g., general practitioners, oncologists, and exercise physiologists) for people with cancer.

ExMed is a charity that partially or fully funds cancer patients in the Manawatū and Horowhenua for up to six months of evidence-based exercise rehabilitation at registered clinical exercise physiology centres.

You can enter the program as a private/self-funding participant or an ExMed funded participant. The amount of funds the charity raise will determine the number of patients that can be funded per year. Self-funding allows program entry independent from funded spaces available.

Medical Clearance

Patients’ need to obtain medical clearance - essentially obtain confirmation from a medical specialist that it is safe for them to start with the guided, supervised exercise. The steps listed below provide guidance on how to get on the program.

STEP 1

Contact the ExMEd for Cancer Charity

Telephone: 021 66 3115
Email: admin@exmed.co.nz

The charity might need confirmation of your cancer diagnosis. For confirmation, you might need to provide the contact details of your general medical practitioner.

Step 1 is to put you in the system and ensure progression towards Step 2.

STEP 2

Referral to MidCentral Oncology

The charity will refer you to MidCentral Oncology for eligibility screening. This is a necessary step to ensure patient safety.

The clinical exercise team will need clinical background information that can only be provided by the MidCentral Oncology specialists.

STEP 3

Upon confirmation that the patient can safely engage in exercise, he/she will be referred to a registered clinical exercise physiologist. OraKinetics is a contract provider for ExMed and offer tailored exercise rehabilitation for referred cancer patients in Palmerston North and Levin.

Note: This funding and program is only available for patients living in the Palmerston North/Manawatu and Levin/Horowhenua Regions.
